Wellington Marinho de Lira is natural of Recife, Pernambuco State, located in the Northeast of Brazil. He is an Applied Linguist and works as an Adjunct Professor at the Universidade Federal Rural de Pernambuco (UFRPE) since 2009. He is a Ph.D. in Educational Sciences with a specialty in Education in Foreign Languages from the University of Minho (2021); a Master in Linguistics from the Federal University of Pernambuco (2004); a Specialist in translation and interpretation in English also from the Federal University of Pernambuco (2004), and Degree in "Letras" licensed in English Vernacular teaching from the Catholic University of Pernambuco (1997).
Areas of expertise: 1 - English for Special Purposes; 2 - Portuguese as a foreign language; 3 - Linguistics.
Between 2003 and 2009 he taught English, Portuguese, and Linguistics in several private colleges. Since 2009, he has been an effective professor (Adjunct II) at UFRPE, working with English language and Linguistics teaching. In 2012 he worked as a visiting professor teaching "Portuguese Intermediate II" and "Second Language Acquisition" at Appalachian State University in North Carolina (USA). He currently coordinates research and extension projects at UFRPE. These projects have their foundations on the bases of language, culture, and identity. He gave several lectures and held workshops on the Portuguese language of Brazil and Brazilian culture at several universities abroad, including Justus-Liebig Universität in Giessen, Germany; Sheridan College in Toronto, Canada; Universidad Metropolitana de Ciencias de la Educación and Universidad de Santiago, both in Chile; Appalachian State University in Boone, NC, in the United States; University of Oslo in Norway and Magnitogorsk State University in Russia. In these lectures and workshops, he sought not only to talk about his research but also about Brazilian culture and the interface between different cultures. He also has experience in the area of translation and interpretation in English / Portuguese as well as in the area of Modern Foreign Languages. Since March 2015, he has been linked to research groups in the area of Education in Foreign Languages at the University of Minho, Portugal.
