SUMMARY:

Data from Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA, 2022) indicate that 55% of students in Brazil did not reach the basic level of proficiency in science. This problem is reflected in several objects of knowledge in Physics, such as thermodynamics, since students have difficulty dissociating concepts based on common sense with scientifically correct ones, such as the conception of heat and its propagation. Furthermore, current documents on education reinforce the need to introduce methodologies that not only insert the student as a protagonist in the learning process, but also that can provide them with critical thinking. Therefore, this work presents a didactic sequence for teaching heat and its forms of propagation, based mainly on the creation of a thermal machine that uses the Seebeck effect through a Peltier module in contact with two thermal reservoirs containing water at different temperatures. During application of the sequence, students immersed themselves in a laboratory practice environment, having contact with circuit components and their various purposes for the first time for most students. In this way, the final project culminated in the activation of an electric motor through the Peltier thermal module, with this the students investigated the transformation of thermal energy into mechanical energy, with electrical energy as an intermediary. Furthermore, they investigated the energy generation process, being encouraged to argue the viability through physical parameters, measurable or not, involved in the process of generating mechanical energy through thermal energy, the latter being an object of knowledge of the second-year high school students involved in the activity. Based on Seymour Papert's Constructionism and the Inquiry-Based Teaching methodology, it was found that the instructional sequence promoted autonomy and the ability to abstract concepts such as heat and temperature, in addition to fostering critical education through Scientific Literacy.
