TITLE:

THE DUALITY OF LIGHT FOR ELEMENTARY EDUCATION: AN INVESTIGATIVE APPROACH FROM CLASSICAL PHYSICS TO QUANTUM MECHANICS.

KEY WORDS:

Photoelectric effect. Duality of light. Discovery learning. Investigative teaching.

PAGES: 133
BIG AREA: Ciências Exatas e da Terra
AREA: Física
SUMMARY:

This study investigates the application of quantum physics in late elementary school
years, with an emphasis on the nature of light and the concept of wave-particle duality. The
research was conducted with a ninth-grade class at a public school in the municipality of
Jaboatão dos Guararapes, PE. An investigative teaching approach was employed, grounded in
Jerome Bruner’s spiral curriculum concept. The methodology was based on the learning
theories of Jerome Bruner, who emphasizes discovery learning, and David Ausubel, who
highlights the importance of students' prior knowledge in the process of meaningful learning.
Other important theorists cited in the work include Anna Maria Pessoa de Carvalho and Marcos
Antônio Moreira. The strategies employed included historical expository lectures, computer
simulations, group experiments, observational experiments, and gamification using the Kahoot
tool. The objective was to identify the students' prior knowledge, learn some characteristics of
light, understand the divergences in the study of its nature throughout history, and develop an
experimentally based understanding of the photoelectric effect. In this way, the goal was to
reach an understanding of the dual nature of light. The results demonstrated that investigative
teaching, by placing students at the center of the learning process, promoted a greater
understanding of quantum concepts and stimulated student engagement. It is concluded that the
investigative approach, grounded in Bruner and Ausubel’s theories, is effective in teaching
abstract and complex concepts, such as quantum physics, to elementary school students.
