OBTAINING PHARMACEUTICAL ENCAPSULATION CONTAINING ETHANOL EXTRACT FROM LEAVES OF Genipa americana L. AND
PHYTOCHEMICAL CHARACTERIZATION AND ANTIOXIDANT ACTIVITY
Genipa americana L., Diabetes Mellitus, microencapsulated.
In Brazil there is a large number of plants popularly used for the treatment of DM, among them, there is the Genipa americana L. which is considered as a therapeutic alternative as phytotherapeutic since it has already proven its antioxidant and hypoglycemic potential in vitro. Thus, the objective was the preparation of microencapsulates with G. americana L. extract and the phytochemical characterization, antioxidant and hypoglycemic activity of both. For this, first the characterization of the vegetable drug was performed and then the extract was made from this raw material that underwent chemical characterization. From the extract, microencapsulates were prepared and these underwent chemical and physical characterization. The characterization of the vegetable drug was in accordance with the Brazilian Pharmacopoeia, with moisture of 10.31%, total ash of 5.93%, absence of foreign matter, intumescence index of 2.5 mL/g and foam index less than 100. Both the ethanolic extract of G. americana L. leaves and the microencapsulated presented significant quantifications of phenolic compounds and flavonoids revealing contents that ranged between 1.04 and 2.68% for phenols and 2.01 and 5.50% for flavonoids being higher than those found in the literature besides having presented antioxidant activity that ranged between 50.17 and 64.76% with IC50 that ranged between 198.34 and 298.71μg/mL also higher than the literature results. The FTIR, SEM and TG-DSC analyses confirmed the efficiency of the microencapsulation and the dissolution test showed excellent results with the best release of 100% of the extract in batch 4 in 30 min and the lowest of 56.86% in the same time which was batch 3. The results presented provide data for obtaining a solid herbal composition of G. americana L.
