SUMMARY:

This research project aims to investigate how the selection processes for school principals are organized in municipal education systems in the Recife Metropolitan Region (RMR), and what the implications are for the exercise of public school management. The research is based on the understanding that the method of appointing principals reflects different conceptions of management, participation, and democratic control. Its general objective is to investigate the various selection processes for school principals in the municipal education systems of the RMR. The study adopts a qualitative approach, with an exploratory and descriptive nature. The main procedures include a bibliographic and documentary review, with data analysis conducted through Discursive Textual Analysis (DTA), which enables a critical interpretation of the discourses and meanings present in normative documents. The research will cover five municipalities in the Recife Metropolitan Region: Recife, Jaboatão dos Guararapes, Ipojuca, Paulista, and Camaragibe. The theoretical framework of the project is grounded in the contributions of authors such as Anísio Teixeira, Vitor Paro, and Heloísa Lück, who discuss democratic school management and democracy in public education. The project addresses different styles of school management (technical-scientific, self-managed, interpretative, and democratic-participatory) and types of principal selection (appointment, public examination, and election).
