SUMMARY:

The research project "Cultural Education: Knowing Through the Cultural Practices of the Coco de Roda Group Chinelo de Pau" aims to understand the knowledge that emerges from the cultural practices of the group based in Recife, analyzing the interconnections between coco de roda, identities, and popular education. Coco de Roda, regarded as a dynamic phenomenon, transcends the artistic domain and has historical roots tied to Afro-Brazilian resistance and identity. The purpose of the research arises from the need to value the emerging knowledge from cultural practices, considering the diverse cultural traditions of the populations that make up our society. It posits that it is in the non-Western roots of popular cultures that we may find powerful alternatives to overcome the crises affecting peripheral societies within the capitalist system. The general objective of the research is to understand the relationships between coco de roda and the process of identity formation and strengthening within the involved communities, through the study of the Chinelo de Pau group. To achieve this objective, it will be necessary to: (i) map the practices and activities of coco de roda in the community, (ii) observe how they are taught, (iii) identify the knowledge mobilized in these activities, and (iv) analyze the meanings assigned by the subjects involved. The theoretical-conceptual foundations of the research are shaped by discussions on concepts of popular culture and education, decolonial pedagogies, and interculturality, problematizing the relationships between education and culture from the perspective of constructing a democratic and popular education contextualized in popular cultures, and thus, open to the formation of subjectivities that do not fit within the traditional school model. The adopted methodology is participatory action research, where dialogue with the subjects is fundamental to the development of the research, with data production through the application of ethnographic methods and instruments such as participant observation, field notes, interviews, and individual and collective conversations.
