Contemporary Art as a territory of imagination and knowledge in Early Childhood: A study through narratives of children aged 3 to 4 at a school in Recife/PE.

This study investigates how aesthetic experiences mediated by Contemporary Art can foster the development of imagination and the construction of meaning in 3- to 4-year-old children in Early Childhood Education. Based on the concept of art as an epistemic field and childhood as a creative force, the research seeks to understand how children express themselves, imagine, and construct knowledge through interactions with works of art, materials, and aesthetic spaces. The proposal begins by listening to children's narratives - gestures, silences, images, and words - that emerge in everyday school life and reveal unique ways of thinking and relating to the world.Methodologically, the research is anchored in the qualitative approach and narrative research (Clandinin and Connelly, 2011), using mini-stories and pedagogical documentation (Fochi, 2019) as its main instruments. The analyses will be conducted based on significant episodes observed in a Kindergarten 3 class at a private school in Recife, Pernambuco. As a basis for this study, I will dialogue with the concepts of experience (Larrosa, 2014), imagination (Vygotsky, 2018; Girardello, 2022), aesthetics (Frigério, 2007; Derdyk, 2025), and listening (Malaguzzi, Rinaldi, 2024; Fochi, 2019), in addition to mobilizing authors who reflect on the presence of Contemporary Art in childhood education (Cunha, 2022; Barbieri, 2021; Orofino and Fantin, 2022). By prioritizing the voices of children and their everyday poetics, this research aims to contribute to the field of Early Childhood Education, proposing Art as a territory of invention, investigation, and thought, capable of supporting educational practices that are more sensitive, critical, and connected to the ways of being and existing in the world that are typical of childhood.
