SUMMARY:

This research aims to investigate the impact of the National Book and Teaching Material Program (PNLD) on promoting anti-racist education and strengthening the racial identity of Black children within the Brazilian school context. The study analyzes how children’s storybooks selected and distributed by the PNLD—one of the largest public book distribution policies in the world—contribute to the development of inclusive education, with a focus on combating racism and building a positive identity for children. Children’s literature, essential in the formative educational process, plays a crucial role in shaping identity foundations. This research seeks to understand how these works can influence the self-esteem of Black children by promoting a positive relationship with their history and identity. The investigation will also address the challenges and potentialities of how the implementation of this policy is reflected in the perspectives of educators, and how the PNLD can support children in becoming adults who are aware of their worth, with a critical and inclusive view of society. In this context, the study will analyze the perspectives of early childhood education teachers, seeking insights into the National Book and Teaching Material Program, examining whether these literary works promote the construction and strengthening of Black children’s ethnic-racial identity. It will also explore how teachers adapt or supplement the material to address racial issues and their experiences and perceptions regarding this critical and inclusive reading approach. Furthermore, the research will consider how Black children respond to the narratives and racial representations present in the literary works and PNLD materials used in the classroom. The research method will be based on qualitative data collection, using semi-structured interviews with early childhood education teachers. According to Triviños (1987, as cited in Eduardo Manzini, 2004), this type of interview is defined as a technique that combines basic questions grounded in theories and hypotheses related to the research topic, with the possibility of new hypotheses emerging from the respondents’ answers.
