Life trajectories of transvestites and transsexuals who served socio-educational measures of deprivation of liberty and passed through the prison system: Education, childhoods and identities
Transgender identity, Juvenile and prison systems, Social exclusion.
This project focuses on analyzing the life trajectories of trans women and travestis who, during adolescence, served socio-educational sentences involving deprivation of liberty and, in adulthood, were later incarcerated in the prison system. The study recognizes that this social group, historically marginalized, faces extreme vulnerability at the intersection of gender identity, youth, race, and class. Institutional invisibility, the absence of specific public policies, and the silencing of their experiences within the juvenile justice system highlight the persistence of a cis-heteronormative logic that systematically excludes individuals who do not conform to dominant gender and sexual norms. The research aims to challenge the role of the State and its educational and punitive institutions as agents of necropolitics, which produce and sustain life paths marked by exclusion, violence, and denial of rights. A qualitative methodology will be employed, with a descriptive and exploratory approach and the case study as the central method. Semi-structured interviews will be conducted with trans women and travestis formerly involved in the socio-educational and prison systems in the Metropolitan Region of Recife. Narrative analysis will follow a discourse analysis perspective, aiming to understand how these experiences are shaped by social, cultural, and institutional structures that normalize violence and hinder full citizenship. By making these life stories visible, the project seeks not only to denounce the violations experienced by this population but also to contribute to the production of evidence that supports inclusive, intersectoral public policies grounded in human rights. The dissertation is organized into four chapters that connect theoretical discussions with empirical reality, culminating in a case study that illustrates the effects of familial neglect, social violence, and state omission on the life of a trans woman. The objective is to break the cycle of invisibility and exclusion by proposing an ethical and transformative listening process, committed to reparation and the dismantling of structural inequalities.
