SUMMARY:

The main objective of this research project is to identify possible contributions from the implementation of the “Leap of Giants” program in the development of socio-emotional skills (self-awareness, self-regulation and responsible decision-making) in children aged 4 to 5. In order to achieve this goal, we set out the following specific objectives: to analyze differences in the program's contribution according to demographic variables (e.g. gender, economic situation, level of education of parents/guardians) and to identify whether and how children are using the socio-emotional skills of self-awareness, self-management and responsible decision-making in other moments of the routine outside the classroom (e.g. recess). In order to meet these objectives, during 19 meetings, we will monitor two classes in the last year of kindergarten, one that will experience the implementation of the Leap of Giants program and the control class that will not experience any intervention. As data collection instruments, we will use participant observation, videography, a field diary, a socioeconomic questionnaire and the Assessment of Children's Emotional Skills (ACES), Behavioral and Emotional Rating Scale - 2 for teachers (BERS - 2 - TRS) and the School Social Behavior Scales (SSBS-2), before and after the implementation of the program. For data analysis, discursive textual analysis and interactional analysis will be used, because by combining these two methods, the research is able to address both the discursive dimension of the textual records and the situational and contextual aspects of the empirical interactions, providing a more complete and integrated analysis of the data. With this, we believe it is possible to map the possible benefits of a structured program in the socio-emotional learning process.
