SUMMARY:
This research focuses on an analysis of the right to education and childhood of children from the outskirts of Recife who live in single motherhood family arrangements and are in situations of adultification, due to precarious support networks and effects related to the transfer of care. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, we have faced an atypical scenario of social isolation and suspension of face-to-face classes in schools around the world. As a result, the work of caring for children in homes of families composed of poor single mothers from the outskirts of the city has faced an increase in the demands related to the field of care, which have a direct impact on the access to education and childhood. Therefore, with this study, from the perspective of women-mothers, we aim to understand the challenges for the materialization of the right to education and childhood of children who live in those single motherhood family arrangements, with an analysis that brings reflections on care work to the heart of the discussion, starting with the experience of children and mothers of a specific School Unit of the Municipal Education Network of the City of Recife, thus seeking to highlight the intersections between care work, the right to education, and childhood. We aim to map the use of time, transfer of care, support networks, and processes related to the adultification that these children are influenced to go through, especially when they become the main/only direct support network in the family. To what extent, depending on the demand and direction, these domestic chores can be understood as child exploitation, thus interfering in their educational process, causing school dropout in most cases. We will seek to obtain the narratives of our participants, through semi-structured interviews that will be made by recommendations from the first women involved in the School's research, from where the starting point of the field of investigation will be, to the other characters in this plot, through the method known as Snowball. The aim is to contribute to the debate on the relationship between education and issues of care, thus seeking to expand the capacity for care in these family arrangements, optimizing women's time, ensuring that children have more humanized care, with greater access to school and education, which is granted full-time, among other support services that provide care and minimize the need for children, mostly girls, to take on this care, in addition to a better quality of life for the mothers.
