Distance Education has grown significantly in Brazil, with an increase in the number of public and private higher education institutions offering courses in this modality. This reflects concern about the quality of teaching and the training of new professionals through distance education courses. Studies that can highlight the knowledge produced in the area, revealing trends and characteristics, can drive new discoveries and innovations that favor the quality of training and contribute to the development of the area. The purpose of this study is to present an overview of the scientific production in distance education, contained in theses and dissertations, in the state of Pernambuco. Our objective with the study is to return data that we consider important in favoring the generation of indicators of knowledge production in the area of distance education, and we believe that the results will provide information that will help in the development of new studies that discuss distance education and contribute to the development of the area.
