SUMMARY:

Sporotrichosis is a zoonotic subcutaneous mycosis caused by saprophytic fungi associated with the disease in humans and animals. Sporothrix brasiliesis is the most prevalent fungal species in Brazil. In recent years, cats have become the main reservoirs of sporotrichosis and one of the main culprits in keeping the fungus in the soil and transmitting it through bites and scratches. The aim of this study was to evaluate the epidemiological and clinical characteristics of Feline Sporotrichosis in the Metropolitan Region of Recife. The cats were treated at the Veterinary Hospital of the Federal Rural University of Pernambuco and diagnosed by fungal culture. The S. brasiliensis species was identified by the PCR technique in all 110 samples (100%). As for the epidemiological variables, the majority of the animals were adults 94 (85.5%), males 68 (61.8%), non-castrated 52 (47.3%), semi-domesticated 91 (82.7%), in contact with the ground 102 (92.7%), with a predominance of houses 90 (81.8%) as the type of dwelling. A history of fights was reported in 47 (42.7%) and the majority were first-time fungal infections, 64 (58.2%). The city of Recife had the highest concentration of cases 70 (63.6%), followed by the city of Camaragibe 11 (10%). The disseminated cutaneous form associated with mucocutaneous 36 (32.7%) was the most prevalent. Dermatological clinical signs were the most frequent, characterized by ulcers 98 (89%) and crusts 85 (77.3%), followed by respiratory signs of sneezing and rash. The disseminated cutaneous form associated with mucocutaneous 36 (32.7%) was the most prevalent. Dermatological clinical signs were the most frequent, characterized by ulcers 98 (89%) and crusts 85 (77.3%), followed by respiratory signs of sneezing 67 (61%) and nasal swelling 57 (51.8%). As for the distribution of lesions, the three most affected regions were the ear 55 (50%), followed by the nose and pelvic limb, both reported in 50 (45.5%) cats. We conclude that the epidemiological and clinical characterization of felines with sporotrichosis has allowed us to assess the behaviour of the disease in the RMM, which has not yet been studied, and is thus a tool for designing management and prophylaxis measures to control the spread of this disease.
