SUMMARY:

Cananga odorata is a tree native to Asia and the essential oil (EO) obtained from its flowers has anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antiviral, antioxidant, and sedative properties. The objective of this study was analyze the phytochemical composition and antimicrobial activity of EO of C. odorata and the presence of contaminants in the ointment formulated with the EO at 10%. The EO of C. odorata was commercially obtained and the phytochemical analysis was performed utilizing gas chromatography coupled to mass spectroscopy (GC/MS). For the ointment formulation, 10g of EO was added to 90g of Vaseline and the mixture was homogenized. The microbiological analysis of the EO and the ointment was performed by the minimum inhibitory concentration test and determination of the minimum bactericidal concentration, while for the ointment a test was performed to determine the presence of contaminants. Phytochemical analysis revealed β-caryophyllene (19%), Linalool (14%), cis-Cadine-1(6),4-diene (13%), Benzyl benzoate (8%), Geranyl acetate (8%) as the main components. The ointment microbiological analysis showed the absence of contamination. The antimicrobial activity of the EO, demonstrated the bactericidal effect of the EO against the tested microorganisms. In conclusion, the commercial EO of C. odorata showed variations in phytochemical composition and the microbiological results highlight the antimicrobial activity, including Against microorganisms that reside on the skin.
