SUMMARY:

The broad-snouted caiman (Caiman latirostris) is a crocodilian reptile frequently subjected to interactions that can lead to various types of disorders, including those affecting the organs in the celomic cavity, such as the liver. However, diagnosing these diseases becomes a challenge since clinical signs are often nonspecific or nonexistent, and abnormalities are only detected during post-mortem examination. In this context, quantifying hepatic radiopacity through computed tomography (CT) can be an efficient method, although there is no data described for the liver parenchyma of these animals. This study aimed to infer normality parameters for radiographic attenuation through CT in C. latirostris hatchings. For this purpose, 21 individuals from 3 different nests were used, with 10 from nest 1 (N1), 6 from nest 2 (N2), and 5 from nest 3 (N3), aged 21, 14, and 7 days post-hatching, respectively. The CT examination, quantification of aspartate aminotransferase (AST), as well as macroscopic and histological evaluation of the liver parenchyma were performed. The mean values for radiographic attenuation in the total liver parenchyma were 25.70 HU (±5.63 HU) in N1, 26.15 HU (±5.36 HU) in N2, and 10.08 HU (±3.97 HU), which was considered hypoattenuating compared to other adult reptile species. These findings may be associated with the metabolism of yolk, the main energy source in caiman hatchings. There was also a statistical difference in AST, and the presence of diffuse fat droplets in hepatocytes on histological examination, which may also be associated with the idea previously exposed. In this study, it was possible to infer statistically accurate values for radiographic attenuation in the general liver parenchyma of broad-snouted caiman hatchings, ranging from 23.11 to 28.67 HU (α = 0.05) for animals aged between 14 and 21 days post-hatching.
