SUMMARY:

This work aimed to evaluate the toxicity of synthetic insecticides such as deltamethrin and botanicals as possible less toxic substitutes on the biological parameters of adult zebrafish (Danio rerio) and to identify substances with protective action against fetal intoxication by deltamethrin using zebrafish embryos as an animal model. Adult animals were exposed for 70 days to synthetic and botanical insecticides where behavioral parameters were evaluated. In addition, embryos were exposed to concentrations of 100 - 1000 μg/L of deltamethrin where three experiments were performed. The epiboly was evaluated at 8 h and the teratogenic effects and mortality were evaluated after 22 and 46 h of exposure. The exposure of adult zebrafish to deltamethrin caused 100% mortality of the animals and the mixtures containing deltamethrin modified the behavior. On the other hand, exposure to essential oils mainly altered foraging behavior. In the zebrafish embryo model for fetal intoxication by deltamethrin, a dose-dependent reduction in percent epiboly was observed. The animals exposed for 22 and 46 h to deltamethrin were affected by pericardial edema, yolk sac edema, spine deformation, and tail deformation in embryos and larvae. We conclude that synthetic insecticides and essential oils can modify the behavior of adult zebrafish. Regarding the insecticides tested, the most toxic was deltamethrin. However, mixtures of essential oils can be promising in insect control, as they have low toxicity to fish. Concerning the zebrafish as a model of fetal intoxication, the concentration of 500 μg/L and 22 h caused toxic effects during embryonic development, which is the best concentration and time to propose a model for research in the health area and the discovery of substances with protective effect for the fetus.
