SUMMARY:

The objective of this research was to carry out an epidemiological-molecular study of Map infection in sheep farms in the state of Pernambuco, Brazil. A total of 276 blood samples and 261 feces samples were collected from sheep from ten properties in the state of Pernambuco, Brazil. Subsequently, the blood samples were submitted to the serological test of Enzyme Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA; IDEXX Paratuberculosis Screening®). Stool samples were processed for microbiological culture and molecular analysis by Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR). Of the 276 serum samples analyzed, 0.72% (2/276) were positive for anti-Map antibodies. Microbiological examination showed no colonies suggestive of Map, and all samples were negative in PCR. The survey results suggest that there is a low prevalence of Map infection in sheep herds. Despite the low prevalence, periodic monitoring is necessary in sheep herds because it is a notifiable disease that causes damage to rural producers.
