SUMMARY:

Chemistry is a science of wide application, contributing significantly to public health and safety policy actions. In public safety, it has been prominent in forensic chemistry. In the field of health, chemistry is fundamental in the development, quality control and storage of pharmaceutical and food products. This, the present study was addressed two themes related to public health and safety questions. The first chapter was directed to toxicological evaluation and possible chemical modifications of vitamins A, B9, C, D3, E and H exposed to tobacco cigarette smoke. The chemical profiles obtained by UV, HPLC and GC showed that all vitamins were degraded by cigarette smoke, with a degradation rate ranging from 18.1 to 61.2%, with the lowest rate for vitamin B9 and the highest for vitamin E. The data from the GC/MS analysis allowed the identification of the compounds (E)-5-(1-hydroperoxy-2,2-dimethyl-6-methylenecyclohexyl)pent-4-ene-1,3- diol; 6-((E)-4-((Z)-2-(5-hydroxy-2-methylenecyclohexylidene)ethylidene)-7a-methyloctahydro-1H-inden-1-yl)-2-methylheptane-2,3 -diol and methyl 2-(2-hydroxyethyl)-4-(propan-2-ylidene)cyclopentanecarboxylate as degradation products of vitamin D3. The second chapter was directed towards addressing problems of false negative results in the field using the Scott test on cocaine samples colored or containing other cutting agents. Thus, a prototype of a rapid, low-cost and easy to use kit was developed for testing cocaine in the field, without the presence of adulterants such as dyes. The kit consisted of a syringe with plunger containing an activated carbon-based filter and a cellulose matrix with dry Scott's reagent. The developed kit was efficient to remove interferents that cause false negative results in samples tested with Scott's reagent and it is a promising product to be commercialized. The partial results already contribute to public health and safety policies, providing important information to professionals in both areas.
