This doctoral research proposal focuses on the history of the Pastoral da Juventude Rural - PJR (Rural Youth Ministry) in the region of Cariri, in the state of Ceará, in the 1990s. The PJR is a Catholic religious youth organization of an ecumenical nature, built by Brazilian rural youth from 1983 onwards. It arrived in the Cariri region at the beginning of the 1990s, through the Diocese of Crato/CE, which was starting to work with young people based on their specific characteristics. It invited some rural young people to get to know the PJR and organize grassroots groups in the diocesan region. To facilitate the process, the young people organized a committee made up of 10 people, 5 women and 5 men, from the municipalities of Brejo Santo, Milagres, Nova Olinda and Santana do Cariri. The time frame, the 1990s, corresponds to the period of activity of this commission of young people responsible for implementing pastoral work in the region. The Cariri region has historically been the scene of many important and nationally known uprisings and social mobilizations, such as the Juazeiro Sedition and the Caldeirão da Santa Cruz do Deserto. On this soil, resistance has prevailed since the colonial, imperial and, above all, republican periods, inspiring the emergence of countless forms of social organization and mobilization of various groups, such as women, young people, indigenous people, quilombolas, among others. It was precisely in this region that the first youth groups of the PJR in Ceará emerged. In this way, our general objective is to construct a historical narrative of rural youth from the Cariri region in the state of Ceará, who contributed to the process of organizing other rural youth through the grassroots groups of the Rural Youth Ministry. The specific objectives are To understand how the Pastoral da Juventude Rural was constituted as a space for engagement and organization of rural youth in the Cariri region; To analyze how the Brazilian historical-conjunctural context contributed to the emergence of rural youth groups and social organizations concerned with the situation of youth in rural areas; and, To discuss how life stories can contribute to the elaboration and/or re-elaboration of the historical trajectory of the PJR. The research problem aims to answer how the process of welcoming the institutional proposal of the PJR aligned with Liberation Theology and the pastoral interests of the Diocese of Crato, which in a way mediated the articulation of the groups, came about. The main sources of this research are the oral narratives of Cícera, Cícero and Aloísio, who served on the commission responsible for the creation and initial coordination of the grassroots groups in the municipalities of Nova Olinda, Brejo Santo and Milagres. Institutional documents from the PJR, such as reports on regional and national deliberative activities, will also be used. The hypothesis is that the Diocese of Crato exerted a strong influence on the first grassroots groups of the PJR in the 1990s, restricting, to a certain extent, the debates and political participation of the leaders. This interference contributed to the emergence of conflicts between leaders who advocated a more autonomous approach in line with the RYP's institutional proposal and those who prioritized an approach closer to the interests of the diocese.
