SUMMARY:

In the following pages, the reader will find research that analyzed, through Cultural History, the political and theological narratives constructed around the Fundamentalist Presbyterian Movement in Brazil. Although Protestant fundamentalism had a strong emphasis on biblical language, it was not limited to the theological field. The movement also emerged in Brazil as a means of preserving social and political order, supporting the groups in power after the civil-military coup of 1964 and adopting a critical stance towards left-wing political movements. In this context, it was possible to observe how the anti-communist ideology was reinterpreted and expanded in the movement's imagination, supported by discourses and theological concepts that served as tools of accusation, surveillance and institutional cohesion in the face of an external “threat” identified with communism.his reinterpretation of anti-communism is believed to have played a fundamental role in building the identity and cohesion of the fundamentalist Presbyterian movement in Brazil. The time frame of the research covered the period from 1956, the year in which Rev. Israel Furtado Gueiros was dismissed from his position as minister of the Presbyterian Church of Brazil and founded the Fundamentalist Presbyterian Church of Brazil, until 1997, when the movement was reorganized amid leadership crises and the loss of assets. The study was based on several sources, including the periodicals A Defesa, Norte Evangélico, and Diario de Pernambuco, as well as the Minutes of the Local Council of the Presbyterian Church of Recife. These sources revealed how representations of communism, theological modernism, and ecumenism were shaped by the leadership of the IPFB and how these discourses circulated, generating new meanings among the members of the denomination. This study highlights the intersection between religion and politics in Brazil, and how theology could be shaped to respond to and influence social and political dynamics.
