SUMMARY:

The present dissertation seeks to analyze the History of Brazil in the present time in the didactic production of Armando de Albuquerque Souto Maior, who was a notorious northeastern intellectual figure during the 1960s and 1990s. In order to be able to observe this phenomenon, it was of fundamental importance to restrict ourselves to the analysis of the chapter entitled "The Contemporary Republic" in the textbook História do Brasil: para o curso colegial e vestibulares de Souto Maior, dated in its first edition of 1965. This textbook was also one of the most circulated during and after the context of the Military Dictatorship (1964-1985). Due to this fact, the time frame of the research was maintained according to the year of the release of the first edition until the year in which it stopped being distributed (1965-1990). The research in its initial phase sought to highlight the production of theses and dissertations on what has been discussed within graduate programs in History about didactic historiography between the years 2003 and 2023 in Pernambuco, to verify the existence of studies that work with the textbook as a cultural object in the school space. Of the results, most of the productions refer to the uses of the textbook aimed at the teaching of Brazilian History, exploring it from various themes using the concept of representation. This study sought to be based on authors of Cultural History such as Roger Chartier with the concepts of reception and circulation. For the methodology of analysis of the textbook, we used Paul Ricoeur's hermeneutic circle. And for the discussions on didactic historiography and textbooks during the military regime in Brazil, we used classics such as Alain Choppin, Circe Bittencourt, Kazumi Munakata, Décio Gatti Jr., Juliana Filgueiras, among others. This study has the function of understanding how textbooks allow the observation of the crossing of the temporality of Contemporary History, contributing to the field of investigation of the History of History Teaching during the period of the Military Regime in Brazil.
