BREGA MUSIC: CULTURE AND IDENTITY OF RECIFE
RECIFE; CULTURE; BREGA; MUSIC; IDENTITY
This work addresses the historicity of brega music in the city of Recife. In recent decades, the
brega movement, its music and its artists have been constituted and constituents of the
identity and culture of social artistic movements in the capital of Pernambuco in a symbiotic
way with the identity of its population. Firstly, the constituent characteristics of the fluid
identity of Pernambuco's brega music and its particularities are analyzed, then the conflicts
revealed by brega music within the society of the city of Recife. The second part of this work
addresses the classic period of brega music, the first generation represented by the
protagonism of men and their bohemian lives, followed by the analysis of subsequent
generations: the second generation marked by the strong presence of the female figure and her
desires, then libertos and the third generation, which is classified by the expansion of brega as
a national movement by encompassing elements of carioca funk generating the mixture of
brega funk and its MC's. We hope, therefore, reveal the brega music and their intimate
influences within the social culture of the capital of Pernambuco, now recognized as the
capital of brega.
