Between scratches, scribbles and texts: Representations of children and adolescents in the world of adult work (Pernambuco, 2006–2014)
Exploitation of Child Labour; Children and Adolescents; Public Policies; Drawings; Writing; Rights.
The aim of this research is to historicise the representations of the exploitation of child and adolescent labour in the world of adult work, constructed from drawings and essays in the Free Art Competition, held in 2014. To this end, a documentary collection comprising 2,107 drawings and 948 essays from the competition will be used. We will also use 285 clippings from the Official Gazette of Pernambuco, minutes and official documents from the State Council for the Rights of Children and Adolescents. We will work from the perspective of the History of the Present Time, understanding children and adolescents in their multiple realities and ways of life. We will also consider the exploitation of labour as one of the worst violations of rights. We will define the research problem based on a few questions that will accompany us on this journey: How have strategies to combat the exploitation of children and adolescents in the world of adult labour been devised and constructed through public policies since 1990? How were these strategies assimilated by different children and adolescents in Pernambuco? We worked on the hypothesis that the 2014 edition of the Arte Livre competition enabled different children in the state of Pernambuco to interpret and represent, in drawings and essays, their perceptions of the exploitation of child and adolescent labour in the world of work.
