SUMMARY:

This is research into the uses of justice and violence in a rural village, called Água Branca,
located in the province of Alagoas, in the Sertão do São Francisco region, in the 1870s and
1880s. Using summary crimes, kept in the collection of the Forum Miguel Arcanjo de Siqueira
Torres, the periodical Jornal do Penedo and the reports of the presidents of the province of
Alagoas, the crimes are analyzed from a social history perspective, privileging a micro view of
the sources, in which individuals appear as central characters in the conflicts that involved the
village’s residents. In this sense, the study seeks to understand the consolidation of judicial
power in Água Branca village throughout the 19th century. It inquires about how conflicts are
resolved through the use of violence, gathering information about the crimes that occurred in
the parish, who the defendants and victims were and the motivations for the crimes. Investigates
the relationship between norms and moral values with the occurrence of crimes, as well as
inequality between men and women in country society. Finally, it seeks to understand the
impact of justice on the lives of enslaved and freed people and the changes in justice with the
transition from the Empire to the Republic.
