THE RECEPTION OF ANTIQUITY IN MODERN ART IN PERNAMBUCO: THE CASE OF OFICINA FRANCISCO BRENNAND
Art; Francisco Brennand; Teaching; Ancident History.
This text aims to analyze the artistic productions of Francisco de Paula Coimbra de Almeida Brennand, a prominent artist from Pernambuco who, in some of his works, drew inspiration from elements of Ancient Egypt. The works: Primordial Egg (1968), Giant Cats (1979), Obelisk (1985) and Sphinxes (1983) represent a clear case of “reinterpretation or reuse of traces of ancient Egyptian culture” called Egyptomania by Margareth Bakos (2003, p.10). In this way, we intend to analyze and explain the works of Francisco Brennand as a possible methodological contribution to the teaching of Ancient History, but specifically of Ancient Egypt. Furthermore, it is inherent to the need to highlight the artist for the architectural legacy he left in the city of Recife and in the world. With a rigorous constitutive process, starting with the choice of the clay deposit until the firing, essential for the uniqueness of the works. Certainly, as it is a little studied topic, this work will contribute to a historiographical field that is still under development.
