SUMMARY:

This research sought to investigate the multiple constructions of memories about the droughts that occurred between the years 1932 and 1970 in Cariri Ceará, intending to find (in the oral memories of the region's historical subjects and in other available written sources) the plurality of meanings of the droughts to starting from memory, in a sociocultural perspective, reflecting the composition of such memories as representation, sensitivity and collective and individual construction.

This study is divided into three chapters. The first of them discusses the concept of representation from an epistemological point of view. It is absolutely necessary to get in touch with the main discussions on the topic within the theoretical assumptions of the New Cultural History.

The second chapter operates the concept of representation and memory by analyzing Ceará's Cariri from the point of view of travelers from the 18th and 19th centuries and also understanding the role of the press (newspapers) in the creation of the singularized image of Cariri. It is important to understand how Cariri was created based on its geographic particularities, regionalist discourses and the naturalistic perspective of travelers at the time.

The third chapter is under construction.
