THE FABRICATION OF A "CITY OF GREATNESS": MEMORIES AND IDENTITIES IN THE DIGITAL MUSEUM OF CAMPINA GRANDE

SUMMARY:

The present research analyzes memories and images that have been constructed about Campina Grande, a city located in the agreste region of Paraíba, Brazil. Here, we seek to understand the discourse of Campina as Grande (Great) constructed from the aspirations of its local elites. In an attempt to comprehend the construction and maintenance of identities, especially that known as "Campinismo," we define the main object of analysis as the Digital Museum of Campina Grande, belonging to the Social Service of Industry (SESI), from which our sources derive. We focus on the present time frame, as the museum's inauguration dates back to 2017. However, utilizing Williams' (1972) metaphor of escalators, we traverse different epochs, mapping the incidences of these discourses of greatness, the elements that sustain it, as well as those that diverge from it and generate contradictions throughout its history. Embedded within the perspective of the New Cultural History, at the interface between discussions of memories, museums, cities, representations, identities, imaginaries, and sensitivities (Chartier, 1990; Pesavento, 2005), but also in dialogue with other authors from both history and other fields of the Humanities and Social Sciences (Candau, 2014; Poulot, 2013; Foucault, 1987), it fits into the research line of Culture, Heritage, and Memory, which values the study of social memory as a producer of meanings and identities. For the interpretation of sources, we rely on Ricouer's hermeneutics (1997) as a theory of the operations of understanding. The thesis is divided as follows: In the Introduction, we discuss theoretical and methodological aspects. In a second moment, entitled "The invention of the city's greatness: expressions of a Campinense identity in local historiography," we provide a historiographical overview of the city, conducting a critical review. In the next chapter, "The Digital Museum of Campina Grande: exhibition project and memorial about the city," we explore the conditions that enabled not only the installation of the digital museum but also efforts in the consolidation of a tech city. In the final chapter titled "Campinismo at the Sesi Digital Museum of Campina Grande," the inaugural exhibition is analyzed in detail, believing that this space is a synthesis of the memory and identity of the city's greatness.
