SUMMARY:

This thesis aims to understand what reasons led the province of Paraíba to stand out as one of those that sent the least men to the Armed Forces, in a research period from 1840 to 1864. This work analyzes the ways in which the authorities that made up the Brazilian state carried out military recruitment, using the province of Paraíba as an interlocutor for this analysis. When examining the process of enlisting men for the Brazilian Army, the political plots involved in the procedure were observed, as well as symbols, representations and practices that characterize the political cultures of the 19th century in Brazil. In addition to a process that had as its principle the filling of the ranks of military organizations, recruitment can also be perceived as a system used to maintain order, through social control of the poor free population; Furthermore, recruitment became an instrument of political persecution, posing a real threat to opponents, in contexts of electoral disputes and insurrections against groups in power. When analyzing the recruitment process that took place in Brazil in the 19th century, the data presented by the Ministry of War Reports and the survey of bibliographic data on the subject, the province of Paraíba stands out as one of those that contributed least to the process of mobilizing recruits. , comparing it with most other provinces. Studies dedicated to investigating the recruitment process in the 19th century in Brazil present recruitment as a tribute that poor free men wished to avoid, being used by the Brazilian state as an instrument of control over such a population, but it also constituted as a theme linked to the construction of the state in Imperial Brazil, although it is necessary to relativize the strength of the Brazilian state when promoting the enlistment of men for the Army and Navy, taking into account the patronage relationships and the clientelistic network of which it was part it was most decisive during the “seizure” of recruits. However, the reasons why each province contributed to a greater or lesser extent must be investigated in more depth. Therefore, this research seeks to understand the variation in the mobilization of recruits, through a more accurate investigation of the province of Paraíba. This research addresses such issues linked to military recruitment, leading to an understanding of the elements that surrounded the political cultures of Brazil in the 19th century, addressing clientelistic relations, the construction of the national state in Imperial Brazil, political disputes between liberals and conservatives , the institutional arrangements between local powers and central power, the types of labor that made up the economic system, the organization of line troops and the coercive power of the Brazilian state.
