ECONOMY AND FREEDOM IN THE 19TH CENTURY (BANANEIRAS-PB, 19TH
CENTURY).
Slavery. Freedom. Bananeiras-PB. Law 2.040. XIX century.
The present qualification thesis text intends to understand slavery and the ways of obtaining
freedom by women and men in the condition of enslaved in the Vila/City of Bananeiras, located in
the Province of Paraíba, during the 19th century. For this, we propose a dialogue with the
theoretical-methodological references of the Social History of Slavery in the face of a documentary
corpus as varied as donations of sesmaras, post-mortem inventories, enrollment lists, wills, freedom
actions, baptism records, newspapers, legislation and historiography that allow us to perceive the
movements in search of freedom made by the “population of color” in Bananeiras. Therefore, it is
necessary to know better this region of Paraíba and what possibilities were possible for the black
slave population to achieve their manumission. So far, we have identified that freedom was
recorded in various documents with due compensation. In view of this, we present the scenario of
distribution of sesmarias from the "strength" of cattle in the Captaincy of Paraíba to the region that
was Bananeiras at the end of the 18th century to the 19th century, passing through its agricultural
production such as sugarcane. , cotton, manioc and coffee besides the creation, reaching its
commercialization in the warehouses located in the streets of Vila/Cidade de Bananeiras-PB. It is in
this scenario of diversified economy that the enslaved population will arrange in their favor and that
of their family and friends possibilities to buy their legal freedom or that of third parties through the
different paths indicated before and after Law nº 2040 of 1871.
