SUMMARY:

Chrysocharis caribea Boucek (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae) is a solitary larval endoparasitoid and cenobiont of Liriomyza sativae Blanchard (Diptera: Agromyzidae). In Brazil, there is little information about this parasitoid. However, carrying out basic studies is important to understand some bioecological aspects of this species, contribute to phylogenetic and cytogenetic studies and subsequently verify its applied use, based on its potential in population regulation of pest agromyzids. Therefore, the objective of the study was to understand the time of immature development, its morphology and complement its adult description. Monitoring and characterization were carried out on the host L. sativae in melon plants (Cucumis melo L.). Second instar larvae of L. sativae were exposed to parasitism by C. caribea. Then, the plants were placed in B.O.D. (temperature of 25 ± 2ºC, relative humidity of 60 ± 10% and photophase of 12 hours). During the description, every 24 hours, 20 parasitized larvae/pupae were dissected to record the development time and characterize the immature phases of the parasitoid. Measurements were carried out under a Leica S8APO Stereoscope Microscope, with magnification up to 80x. The number of larval instars was defined using K-means. Based on data analysis, body length and width measurements associated with head capsule measurements indicated that the species has three larval instars, with an immature development time of 13 days. The eggs are anhydropic and hyaline. The first instar is specialized eucoiliniform, while the second and third are vermiform. The adult has distinct characteristics, males and females are sexed by the morphology of the scapes and abdomen. The information collected is essential for carrying out future research with this species.
