A new species of Udeus Champion (Curculionidae, Curculioninae, Eugnomini) from Brazilian Cerrado, with a description of immatures and notes on the natural history
Taxonomy, Brazil, Embauba
Udeus Champion is a genus of Eugnomini associated with Cecropia Loefl. inflorescences, with 11 valid species distributed in the Neotropics. Its biology is poorly known and although abundant in nature they are rare in insect collections. Here, we described Udeus cerradensis sp. nov. including descriptions of larvae and pupae of this species. Notes on natural history are provided with a description of the predation behavior of larvae of U. cerradensis sp. nov. by social wasps Synoeca surinama (L.) and Protopolybia aff. sedula (de Saussure). This study is the first of a sequence of studies about the Natural History of Udeus trying to understand the specific association of these weevils with their host plants.
