SUMMARY:

Augmentative biological control with parasitoids has been successfully applied against sugarcane stalk borers. The parasitoid Tetrastichus howardi Oliff (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae) may offer mortality for sugarcane stalk borers pupae, which are not parasitized by the parasitoids currently in use. Nevertheless, insecticide applications required to control sugarcane borers and other pest species can affect T. howardi survival and parasitism. Survival, parasitism, and locomotory behavior of T. howardi females were determined using residues of insecticides from different chemical groups - chlorantraniliprole, bifenthrin, spinetoram, ethiprole, fipronil, and thiamethoxam. Females of the parasitoid were confined on residues of the insecticides at 2, 24, 48, 72, and 96h intervals after application and survival was monitored during 96h with subsequent determination of parasitism with surviving females. Furthermore, locomotory activity of females were observed individually using half-treated arenas with the insecticides. Chlorantraniliprole was compatible with females of T. howardi irrespective of insecticide residue intervals with survival, parasitism, and locomotory activities similar to the control treatment. Other tested insecticides did not allow parasitoid survival up to 96h of confinement on dry residues and, consequently parasitism. Locomotory activity indicated that parasitoid female avoided residues of spinetoram and ethiprole. After 24h from 10 min of locomotory activity in half-treated arenas with chlorantraniliprole, ethiprole, fipronil, spinetoram, bifenthrin, or thiamethoxam, 100%, 73.3%, 70%, 66.7%, 10% and 0% of females were alive, respectively. Therefore, only chlorantraniliprole was compatible with T. howardi across the bioassays and tested insecticides.
