SUMMARY:

In the context of the growing global challenges of the 21st century, STEM education (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) emerges as fundamental for preparing students for the future. Recognizing the importance of overcoming the barriers of traditional teaching, this dissertation project explores the use of virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) as pedagogical tools in teaching abstract scientific concepts that are difficult to represent or costly to demonstrate, such as those present in STEM disciplines. In this sense, this research seeks to answer the question: how can the use of augmented reality and virtual reality applications contribute to improving the quality of education, favoring the understanding of scientific concepts from the STEM perspective? The objective is to analyze how the use of an AR and VR application, based on the STEM approach, can influence the perception of phenomena and scientific concepts and the engagement of high school students during learning. The research has a qualitative approach, being a case study, documentary and exploratory research, with the participation of students and teachers from a state school in Pernambuco, in the municipality of Serra Talhada. The methodology is divided into five stages: stage 1 involves the survey of AR and VR applications and the development of an application, including the search for applications for teaching STEM concepts in Google Play, analysis, and subsequent development of an application to study students' perceptions; stage 2 consists of the development of an application for teaching scientific concepts in the STEM approach, as well as the analysis of the applications surveyed in the previous stage; stage 3 consists of a systematic literature review (SLR) and proposition of application strategies in the classroom, seeking successful experiences of using AR and VR applications in the teaching and learning context to serve as a basis for the adaptation and/or elaboration of application strategies; stage 4 is the classroom application of the developed application; and finally, in stage 5, data will be collected through a semi-structured questionnaire and logbook to extract students' perceptions. The applications will be qualitatively analyzed based on the Cognitive Theory of Multimedia Learning and the Educational Applications Evaluation Model, categorizing and evaluating according to established criteria. The SLR will be narratively synthesized, grouping studies and identifying patterns in AR and VR strategies in STEM teaching. It is expected that the results will contribute to understanding the potential of VR and AR technologies in STEM education, promoting relevant pedagogical practices that engage students and better prepare them for future challenges.
