RESEARCH AND WRITING IN SCHOOL PROJECTS IN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL: REPERCUSSIONS ON SCIENCE LITERACY
Writing, Science Literacy, School Projects
Science Literacy (SL) is crucial for the development of individuals capable of understanding, analyzing and making informed decisions about issues that permeate contemporary society. However, many students face significant challenges when trying to acquire this skill, especially with regard to the written expression of scientific concepts and the experience of these terms in everyday life. The focus of this project is on the relationship between scientific writing and SL, which provides an essential theoretical framework to enable students to understand, analyze and make informed decisions about scientific issues in contemporary society. Scientific writing is not just a transmission of information, but also requires the ability to articulate ideas in a clear, cohesive, and precise way. The central research problem addresses how the act of "writing science" is inserted in Scientific School Projects (in Portuguese we call it PEC) and its implications for science learning, scientific literacy and critical autonomy of elementary school students. This problem arises from the need to understand how SL is practiced in schools, especially when being aware of recent data from the 2021 Brazilian Education Assessment System, which demonstrate low proficiency in the Portuguese language among elementary school students, which, in principle, it would impact the entire science teaching process. To achieve answers to these questions, the project outlines four specific objectives: understanding the PEC and their contributions to SL; analyze the meanings attributed to the PEC by students and teachers; explore how and if the act of writing contributes to SL; and develop pedagogical material to support PEC in schools. The general objective is to understand the relationships between writing and SL through the PEC, observing their meanings attributed by teachers and students. The research will adopt a qualitative approach, based on phenomenology, based on studies by Edmund Husserl and other authors. It will be held in a public school located in the metropolitan region of Recife, Pernambuco, which promotes SL through school projects. Data collection will involve survey questionnaires, phenomenological interviews with students and teachers, as well as focus groups to understand the dynamics between them. Data analysis will follow phenomenological assumptions. It is expected to find new features in the SL parameters, as well as to produce greater connections between elementary schools and higher education.
