SUMMARY:

Nutritional management is an important factor in obtaining satisfactory reproductive rates within a property. Buffaloes have high fertility, however, due to the breeding system they are subjected to, they appear as late animals due to the delay in the onset of ovarian activity, establishment of puberty and sexual maturity. Furthermore, the use of strategies aimed at improving reproductive parameters through mineral and vitamin supplementation in cattle herds is known, but these data on the buffalo species are still scarce, which suggests the importance of further scientific research. Thus, the objective was to evaluate the effect of strategic vitamin and mineral supplementation on reproductive performance in buffalo heifers. Healthy Murrah buffaloes (±330kg), capable of reproduction, were subjected to a synchronization protocol for fixed-time artificial insemination (FTAI) and divided into two groups according to the treatment. In the treated group, a vitamin and mineral supplement was administered subcutaneously (KIT Adaptador® MIN and VIT, Biogénesis Bagó, Argentina) twenty days before (D-20) and at the beginning of the hormonal protocol (D0), according to the manufacturer's recommendations; and in the control group, 0.9% NaCl saline solution was administered. To synchronize the animals, an intravaginal device containing 1g of progesterone (Repro Neo®, Biogénesis Bagó, Argentina) and 2.5 ml of GnRH (i.m., buserelin acetate, Gonaxal®, Biogénesis Bagó, Argentina) was inserted on D0. . On D8, the device was removed and 1.5 ml (300 IU) of eCG (i.m., Ecegon®, Biogénesis Bagó, Argentina) and 2 ml PGF2α (i.m., Cloprostenol sodium, Croniben®, Biogénesis Bagó, Argentina) were administered. Argentina); on D10, 2.5 ml of GnRH was applied and on D11, TAI was performed. The animals were monitored throughout the experiment and underwent blood collection at specific times to evaluate the hormonal profile (progesterone and estradiol), biomarkers of oxidative stress (TBARS and glutathione peroxidase); as well as, ultrasound exams were performed to evaluate the establishment and maintenance of pregnancy. The analyzed parameters were not influenced by the treatment carried out between the groups and at different times. It is concluded that the strategic use of vitamin and mineral supplementation with antioxidant activity in buffalo heifers does not promote significant changes in reproductive performance. However, the need to carry out studies with a greater number of animals and, furthermore, further investigation of protocols that better suit the nutritional needs of the category is highlighted.
