SUMMARY:

Low back pain in horses has been studied due to its importance in reducing the performance of athletic horses in various modalities, representing 4.35% of the casuistry of locomotor disorders. Information regarding the etiology or pathogenesis of low back pain is not fully known, either because of difficulty in accessing deeper structures or lack of knowledge of the anatomy and biomechanics of the thoracolumbar spine. Due to the anatomy and importance of the thoracolumbar spine in the dynamics of the horse, several conditions affect the muscles, joints and bones that make up the axial skeleton of horses. Sports and training programs influence the predisposition and prevalence of musculoskeletal injuries and lameness in horses, which, depending on work overload, type of sport and level of training, are related to specific anatomical structures of the locomotor system of these animals. In vaquejada, there are no specific studies on spinal injuries, which justifies the performance of radiographic and ultrasonographic evaluation of the thoracolumbar spine of vaquejada horses in the State of Pernambuco, identifying bone, tendon, muscle and ligament injuries of the thoracolumbar spine of vaquejada horses, relate the prevalence of injuries with the type of activity performed by the horse (treadmill or pulling) and with the age of the athlete. 30 animals (males and females) of vaquejada between 3 and 10 years old will be clinically evaluated. The animals will be divided into 3 groups according to the type of activity they perform, GI: 10 right-pulling animals, GII: 10 left-pulling animals and GIII: 10 mat animals. The examination will consist of a general clinical assessment, as well as a locomotor assessment to observe claudication, recorded in specific forms. After clinical evaluation, the animals will be submitted to imaging tests. The ultrasonographic evaluation will be performed with a Sonoscape A6 device, with a convex and linear probe. The radiographic examination will be performed with the SIUI 100kv X-Ray device for 3 Ma and ABLA software. The present study aims to identify the incidence of the main injuries focusing on the spine of the horses used in the vaquejada competitions, as well as to propose specific therapies and training.
