SUMMARY:

Silicon (Si) is considered a beneficial element, as it provides an increase in quality and crop yield, resistance to biotic and abiotic stresses, and improvement in the availability and assimilation of nutrients. Understanding the availability of soluble and total Si in liquid and solid fertilizers is essential for successful fertilization. In Brazil, more studies are needed to evaluate different sources of Si for various soil and crop conditions. In this study, we assessed the ability of different doses and sources of Si (CaSiO3, diatomaceous earth, agrosilicio, and agrisilica) to supply the element, biomass production, biometric characteristics, and nutrition of corn plants grown in a greenhouse. The experiment consisted of five treatments: 4 doses of the four sources of Si applied to the soil, with corn in a greenhouse (100, 300, 600, and 1000 kg/ha-1) and an additional treatment without fertilizer application. Applying 600 kg ha-1 of the fertilizers SC and AGRO resulted in a 10% increase in soil silicon (Si) availability. AGRI, on the other hand, did not show any significant difference (p < 0.05) between the control treatment and the application of doses. The pH decreased to 6.2 in the soils at the higher silicon doses. Nutrient levels in the soil (P, Mg, Fe, Mn, B, and Zn) increased with the fertilizer doses, with B being the only nutrient that differed significantly among the fertilizers. AGRO and AGRI exhibited more pronounced increases in concentrations compared to other sources. In the aboveground and root parts of maize plants, the application of silicate fertilizers in the soil led to an increase in silicon concentrations, demonstrating the potential of these fertilizers to supply the element. All growth parameters showed significant improvement across all fertilizers. The different sources increased nutrient levels in the plants (N, P, K, Ca, Mg, Fe, Zn, Cu, Mn, and B). Our results indicate that SC, TD, AGRO, and AGRI fertilizers are good silicon sources. Still, the 600 kg ha-1 dose of Agro fertilizer proved agronomically and economically viable.
