Faced with the difficulties in capturing prior knowledge reported by researchers in the area of meaningful learning, 

we raised the following research problem: what is the potential of using fuzzy logic, together with a comparative, 

free-response prior organizer, in capturing and evaluating the degree of development of prior knowledge (underlying) 

present in the cognitive structure of students entering the 1st year of high school? The use of fuzzy logic, together 

with a comparative, free-response prior organizer, is effective in capturing and evaluating prior knowledge 

(subsumers) present in the cognitive structure of students entering the 1st year of high school.
