SUMMARY:

The current research project entitled “A discursive analysis on the nature of science and scientific errors in the initial training of chemistry teachers” is inserted in the context of research that involves the discussion on aspects of the nature of science in initial teacher training from the contextual and functional perspective of Douglas Allchin. Aiming to identify and contribute to the production of more appropriate meanings about the nature of science, it was chosen to emphasize the role of scientific error, based on the analysis of Becquerel's historical episode and his interpretation of penetrating radiation in the 19th century. We have, as theoretical assumption, that analyzing historical cases of error in science helps to describe scientific practices and deepen in the understanding of epistemology. The objective of this project is, therefore, to understand how the formative process from a historical context on scientific error contributes to the production of meanings regarding the nature of the science considering the initial training of chemistry teachers. The qualitative research is based on the French discourse analysis as a theoretical-methodological reference to understand the relations of meanings about science and scientific error that circulate among the people. To collect research information, we will offer a 20-hour mini-course entitled “The role of error in science” for chemistry undergraduate students participating in the UFPB Pedagogical Residency Program (PRP). The mini-course was designed according to the explicit reflective approach of teaching the nature of science and is aligned with the critical rationality model of teacher training, specifically the political and social role of the teacher. During the training process we will make use of the following instruments for collecting research information: portfolio, film recording of classes, written activities proposed to the individuals. We hope with the proposed design to contribute to the deconstruction of dominant meanings about the nature of science and scientific errors, at the same time that subjects advance towards a functional understanding of the nature of science.
