Study of the applicability of landslide mitigating vegetation (Vetiver Grass) in hilly areas of Recife-PE

Recife is a Brazilian municipality that over the years has presented numerous cases of landslides on hill slopes throughout its territory and, in recent years, the number of fatalities from these landslides has been increasing.   Although the erosion processes on the slopes occur through natural agents, human interventions on the hills, such as inappropriate construction and sanitation systems, deforestation of vegetation or negligence intensify the negative environmental impacts in these areas, mainly in relation to mass landslides in slopes. However, positive anthropogenic actions that mitigate landslides may also occur. The use of green containment works can be implemented as a viable, sustainable and economical alternative.   So, in order to minimize landslides in hillside areas, soil bioengineering is used as a solution in engineering works to contain the soil. As it has a more sustainable character, the method studied in this work was the use of Vetiver Chrysopogon Zizanioides and, as a plant species, Vetiver requires appropriate characteristics to achieve its maximum slope stabilization potential. This work seeks, through bibliographical reviews and case studies, to verify the applicability of this species in soils in Recife, with the objective of evaluating its viability for slope stabilization, territorial development of application communities, in line with the climatic and geological aspects of the municipality. and seeking to popularize its use through the support of public authorities.
