TODAY IS FAIR DAY: Socio-environmental Profile of Producers and Consumers of the Agroecological Space of Setúbal in Recife-PE
Organic Agriculture; Food Production and Consumption; Agroecological Fairs.
Throughout the development of civilization, agriculture has undergone several processes of change. However, it was with the Green Revolution, starting in the 1950s, that modern Western agriculture adopted a technological model with emphasis on the intensive use of agricultural mechanization, the use of mineral fertilizers of high solubility and pesticides. Nevertheless, even though it is considered a period of growth in global agricultural production, modern agriculture has been causing strong environmental impacts and significant negative consequences on the health and quality of life of the global population. Thus, in face of a worrying scenario for the environment and for people's health, the principles of alternative agriculture emerged in Brazil in the early 1970s, in opposition to conventional techniques, in order to try less aggressive models for nature and society. The fairs emerge in the middle of this context, in which society starts to question more what it eats and if the food is something that affects the body and/or the environment. The agroecological transition also goes through this path, because it is not only about the way of farming, but also a process of change in attitude, habits and practices that must necessarily reveal an alignment with agroecological principles. Thus, due to the growing global environmental impacts and the increased use of pesticides in conventional agriculture, this research aims to investigate the socio-environmental profile of producers and consumers of the "Agroecological Space of Setúbal and investigate how these social subjects relate to environmental sustainability.
