SUMMARY:

This study aims to investigate how the reversal of grammatical gender contributes to the construction of gender, identity, and the sense of belonging among gay men within the LGBTQIAPN+ community, from a socio-discursive perspective. Based on the assumption that language, understood as social practice (FAIRCLOUGH, 2001), functions not merely as a tool for communication but as a mechanism for the construction of meaning, identity, and power relations, this research also draws on Butler’s (2003; 2014) concept of gender performativity. According to this framework, gender is not a fixed essence, but a socially constructed identity shaped through reiterative and discursive acts. Within the LGBTQIAPN+ context, emerging linguistic practices challenge the binary structure of grammatical gender found in standard Portuguese. Among these practices is the grammatical gender reversal, characterized by the use of feminine grammatical markers—such as the definite article "a"—before traditionally masculine names, as well as the appropriation of terms conventionally associated with femininity to describe individuals who socially identify as men. Although such uses may seem disconnected from formal norms, they reflect deep socio-cultural and identity-based resignifications. This study seeks to understand how these linguistic strategies operate as forms of symbolic resistance and identity affirmation, enabling subjects to construct discursive belonging within the diverse experiences that shape the LGBTQIAPN+ community. Through the analysis of utterances that exemplify grammatical gender reversal, the research highlights how social factors such as sexual orientation, gender identity, and cultural practices intersect in speakers’ linguistic production. The findings suggest that language not only reflects social reality but also plays a transformative role, being fundamental for the expression of dissident identities and the construction of a more inclusive and representative society.
