SUMMARY:

Among the many nuances in learning and acquiring English, whether as a foreign language or as a second language, the gender identity and sexuality of individuals are often not taken into account in research. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the functioning of the English language among Brazilians who differ in terms of sexuality and gender, considering whether there is a relationship of affinity between learning/acquiring English and queer people (LGBTQIAPN+). To this end, we started with a methodology composed of an exploratory-bibliographical stage to gather our theoretical framework and then we used a quantitative-qualitative research approach with the application of two questionnaires: one intended for English language teachers, and another intended for the general public (without concern for their profession). We focus on the interdisciplinarity of Linguistics, drawing more on the fields of discursive studies (Althusser, 1971; Fairclough, 1989, 1995, 2001; Wodak 1979), queer studies (Butler, 1990, 2004, 2024; Eckert; McConnel-Ginnet, 2003; Gonzales; Moita-Lopes, 2022), cultural studies (Silva, 2014; Eagleton, 2005; Hall, 1997; Santos, 1996), and language teaching and learning (Oliveira, 2014, 2015; Richter, 2000; Richards; Rodgers, 1999). We obtained satisfactory data regarding the phenomenon investigated, indicating and confirming our hypothesis of the substantial influence of pop culture and the possibility of finding, in the English language, a type of belonging for people who are dissident in gender and sexuality. In addition to this factor, our research also provides support for future research in the field of language learning, acquisition, and teaching, remembering to be concerned with different gender and sexuality identities as factors that interfere in the process of knowledge construction.
