SUMMARY:

This research is anchored in two main areas: generative linguistics and studies on the teaching and learning of French as a foreign language (FLE). It is based on the observation that some grammar compendiums and teaching materials (such as Pedagogical Grammars and Textbooks) do not usually adequately address some French orality phenomena, such as null subjects and null objects, which are increasingly recurrent in contemporary French. As a general objective, the aim is to investigate the treatment given to the manifestation of null arguments (null subjects and null objects) in the context of FLE teaching and learning. The specific objectives are (1) to understand the status of the Null Subject and Null Object parameters in contemporary French, (2) to verify how the teaching and learning of these linguistic phenomena has been carried out in the FLE classroom based on official regulatory documents and their reflections in grammar compendia and teaching materials and (3) to contribute to the empirical basis of the aforementioned parameters with the collection and quantitative-qualitative analysis of a corpus composed of excerpts from FLE Textbooks and French Pedagogical Grammars. The qualification document is structured in four chapters. The first presents the research, the objectives, the justification, the hypotheses and the structure of the qualification document. The second chapter deals with the teaching and learning of FLE, the influence exerted by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, conceptions of grammars and some epistemological weaknesses in the establishment of this teaching. The third chapter deals with the foundations of generative linguistics, as well as the parameters of the Null Subject and Null Object in contemporary French. Finally, the last chapter deals with the analysis of a corpus made up of excerpts from Pedagogical Grammars and Textbooks, with the aim of verifying the presence of null subjects and null objects in these works. This research aims to promote the integration of linguistic phenomena of orality in the teaching and learning of FLE, fostering teaching that is attentive to contemporary linguistic practices.
