SUMMARY:

This research proposes to create a new nomenclature, in Portuguese, for the literary genre crossover fiction. Based on the conceptualization of the term transetharian literature – that is, books that are not subscribed to single age audiences –, we will have as a literary corpus the work “Contos from distant places” (2012a), by the writer and illustrator Shaun Tan. In the methodological perspective of Minayo (2007), we carried out an exploratory research based on analytical bibliography to discuss the artistic and social relevance of a genre that goes beyond age classifications. We start from a bibliographic review of the crossover genre, with theoretical support from Andruetto (2012 and 2017), Beckett (2009 and 2013) and Falconer (2008 and 2010). We present a historiography of childhood, going through Ariès (1981), Bachelard (1998) and Larrosa (2003) to understand how the concept of “children's literature” accompanies the social vision of the child. In order to connect reflections about the recipient to books for children, we rely on Zilberman (2015) and his studies on the Aesthetics of Reception, based on its founders, Iser (1979) and Jauss (1994). As for the analysis of the literary corpus, we propose an analytical reading of the work “Contos from distant places”, considering main points of dialogue Souza's studies (2016) on the estrangement in Shaun Tan, in connection with Freud's theory of the unfamiliar (1919 ), in addition to the most recent studies by Nodelman (2019) on the articulation between word and image in illustrated books. Finally, this work comprises a dialogical axis supported by Bakhtin's notion of polyphony (1981), which includes an interview with Shaun Tan, and with seven Brazilian authors of the illustrated book. They are: Alexandre Rampazo, Kiusam de Oliveira, Marilda Castanha, Odilon Moraes, Raquel Matsushita, Renato Moriconi and Roger Mello. We hope that this research will be able to contribute to expanding scientific production in the area of literary studies, in view of the need to place transetharian literature on the scene as a new paradigm in discussions about literary production produced for children and young people. We also highlight the appreciation of the illustrated book in contemporary times through the analysis of Shaun Tan's work, in view of the dialogical connections between literary narratives and their aesthetic function through the intersection between verbal and non-verbal languages in the composition of architecture fiction of Tan's tales.
