Verbal Agreement in the First Person Plural in memorial narratives from the Quilombo Águas Claras: a proposal for linguistic education

This research investigates the phenomenon of Verbal Agreement in the First Person Plural (P4) in memorial narratives from the Quilombo Águas Claras, which located in the city of Triunfo/PE, using the theoretical-methodological assumptions of Variationist Sociolinguistics (Labov, 2008 [1972]). The aim of this study is to verify the influence of linguistic and extralinguistic variables on the application or non-application of the P4 agreement rule in the spoken language of the community, and to carry out an action research at the Águas Claras Municipal School based on the results obtained and the collected from the memorial narratives, with the goals of strengthening the quilombola identity of the students and researching the phenomenon of linguistic variation. Whith this goals in mind, the research follows the following methodological steps: recording of memorial narratives from 24 community members, randomly selected and stratified according to the chosen extralinguistic variables; selection of linguistic variables; data collection, transcription of the audios, selection and coding of the data; conducting rounds and cross-tabulations in the Goldvarb-X program; analysis of the results; and the development of action research at the Águas Claras Municipal School under the pillars of Linguistic Education (Bagno, 2000, 2007; Bortoni-Ricardo, 2004, 2005). Thus, the research contributes to the description of the P4 agreement phenomenon in the Quilombo Águas Claras, incorporating new findings from Afro-Brazilian Portuguese, while also helping to promote the socio-historical-cultural visibility of the community, strengthening the quilombola identity and fostering a better understanding of linguistic variation among the students.
