SUMMARY:

The work of Portuguese poet Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen is characterized by its fluidity and the presence of striking themes (sea, tradition, memories, etc.), of which the active dialogue with Greek mythology can be highlighted. In her lyrics, Antiquity is recovered in a contemporary face that is present, especially in the books Poesia (1944), Dia do Mar (1947) and Coral (1950). It is true that the Greco-Latin classic is a central element in much of her poetic production, being significant for Portuguese Literature of the 20th century. However, it is not critically commented on in proportion to its importance. Thus, this work highlights the relevance of the classical influence on the author's work and on ancient and modern literature. In this plan, to explore the myth, the mythological elements and their representations, Eliade (2007), Vernant (2006), Monfardini (2005), Lévi-Strauss (2008) and Brandão (2000) were used. In order to bring Sophia's poetic literary production closer to the myth, Ceia (1996), Eliot (1989), Calasso (2004), Scramin (2006) and Zenith (2019) were used. To rescue aspects of the myth in poetry, covering elements that transit between the symbolic and the imaginary, Durand (2000-2012), Cassirer (2001) and Eliade (1992) were used. To elaborate the analysis of the selected poems, the studies of Spitzer (2003) were used, who formulates hypotheses about the transfiguration of myth in poetry, bringing a contemporary perspective from a philological perspective. In addition, the works of Candido (1996), Bosi (1977) and Paz (1982) were also used to support the poetic contextualization. The research also relied on Dos Santos Cunha (2004), Bulfinch (2002), Graves (2018) and the poetic works of Sophia de Mello Breyner to understand the significance of the classic and Greco-Latin culture. To broaden the approach of the studies in Sophia, the author's critical fortune was used, as in Guimarães (2018), Pagoto (2018), Rezende (2006), among others.
