SUMMARY:

The first novel published by Gilvan Lemos in 1956, Noturno sem Música, portrays the story of Jonas, a 17 year old boy, and his psychological unrest resulting from childhood traumas. Additionally, the young man is consumed by unrequited love, which exacerbates his internal conflicts. Focusing on the interplay between memory and space, this study aims to analyze how these narrative categories can aid in understanding the work, as well as the protagonist's identity. To this end, we explore the theoretical contributions of Hesiod (1995) and his understanding of memory in Greek mythology; similarly, we draw on Plato (1988) and Aristotle (1987) and their deeper insights into this perspective, treating it as an indispensable tool for the formation of knowledge. We also consider Henri Bergson (1999) and his dynamic and interactive approach, associating the concept with perception and action, a perspective complemented by Maurice Halbwachs' (1990) contributions regarding collective memory and its intrinsic relationship with social contexts. In this same vein, the text employs Paul Ricoeur (2007) and his dialectical and articulated view of the individual and collective dimensions of the phenomenon, as well as Ecléa Bosi (1994; 2003), who reinforces its importance as a subjective and transformative force capable of connecting the past to the present in a meaningful way. When the focus shifts to space, Gaston Bachelard (1993) examines its symbolic and affective aspects through a phenomenological lens, while Yi-Fu Tuan (2005; 2015) discusses the terms topophilia and topophobia to explore the relationships between emotions and places. Furthering this discussion, Abdala Junior (1995) analyzes the fictional universe in its subjective and social dimensions, attributing it an analytical role in literary texts; Luís Alberto Brandão (2013) approaches the literary context by addressing its symbolic functions within the plot. In this same direction, Ozíris Borges Filho (2007) uses topoanalysis to interpret spatial notions in the narrative, while Reis and Lopes (1998) emphasize the dynamic and active role of this category in literature, consolidating it as an essential element in narrative construction.
